What Holds a Minnetonka Cedar Fence Together

Cedar fence and pergola in a landscaped backyard with boulders

Here’s something that surprises people. The same natural oils that make cedar rot-resistant are mildly acidic, and they go to work on ordinary steel. Use the wrong screws or nails and within a season or two you’ll see black streaks weeping down every board from every fastener, which no amount of staining will hide.

The fix is simple and it costs very little: hot-dipped galvanized or stainless fasteners, nothing else. We also run three rails instead of two on six-foot panels and keep post spacing tight, because a cedar board that’s free to flex is a cedar board that eventually cups. Small decisions, made once, that you’ll never have to think about again.

These guys do phenomenal work. We have a huge backyard and we we’re expecting them to take a few days, they ended up getting it all done in a day and it looked absolutely stunning! One small issue was when the inspector came out after, it was just barely over the property line on one side. Dave and his team came out and took down and reinstalled to make sure we were within our property line right away. Fantastic communication, quick service and exceptional work. I would recommend Next Day Fence to anyone and everyone.

Our Cedar Fencing Options in Minnetonka

Most cities tell you which way your fence has to face. Minnetonka doesn’t, which means the choice between these four styles is genuinely yours to make on looks and budget rather than on code.

Board-on-Board

Overlapping boards with no gaps and the rails tucked out of sight. It looks finished from both yards, so nobody ends up staring at your posts, and the overlap gives the wood room to move through the seasons without opening up gaps. The most private option we build.

Shadowbox

The rails carry boards on alternating sides, which gives both yards an identical view and lets a breeze through instead of fighting it. Our usual recommendation when two households share the line.

Solid Privacy

Boards butted tight for a complete screen, and the most affordable route to real privacy. Elsewhere you’d have to decide who gets the rails. Here you simply put the good side wherever you want it.

Spaced Picket

Shorter boards with deliberate gaps, for marking a boundary without walling anything in. It suits Minnetonka’s wooded front yards, where a solid fence would fight the setting rather than fit it.

Whichever you land on, it goes up through our cedar fence installation crews, on posts set to the 42-inch frost depth Hennepin County calls for.

Minnetonka Has No Rule About Which Side Faces Out

In St. Louis Park and Plymouth, the structural side of your fence has to point at your own house. Minnetonka takes a different view entirely. The city’s own handout says fencing materials may be placed on either side of the support post, and that there’s no right side or wrong side to it.

That’s genuinely freeing, and it’s worth using well. On a solid privacy fence it means you can give the good face to the street and keep the rails where you’ll barely notice them, or do the neighborly thing and point it their way. On board-on-board or shadowbox the question disappears altogether, since both faces look finished. We’ll talk it through on site, because the one thing worse than a code requirement is a decision nobody made on purpose.

Cedar Care and Fence Replacement in Minnetonka

Two jobs come up over and over here, and neither needs to turn into a project.

Staining Cedar Before the Weather Finds It

Bare cedar goes honey, then silver, then gray, and Minnesota moves it along faster than most places. Cedar fence staining keeps water out of open grain, which is what freezes and prises boards apart over a winter. Give new cedar a season to dry before its first coat, then plan on another every few years. It’s far cheaper than replacing panels that cupped.

Replacing Panels, Posts, and Whole Runs

Cedar tends to go a section at a time rather than all at once, so replacing a few panels and a post or two often beats tearing out the whole run. We’ll tell you honestly which it is. The good news in Minnetonka is that a straight swap under seven feet needs no permit at all, so fence repair here is about as painless as it gets.

Minnetonka Only Permits Fences Over Seven Feet

Minnetonka publishes its rules in a city fence handout, and it’s shorter than most. What shapes a cedar job here:

  • No permit under seven feet. A building permit kicks in above that height, and not before.
  • No setback from the property line. Your fence can run right up to it, as long as it stays on your land.
  • Either side can face out. No structural-side rule at all.
  • 2.5 feet within 25 feet of a paved intersection. A spaced picket stays under it comfortably where a privacy panel cannot.
  • Utility easements are off limits. Fences aren’t allowed in easements holding public utilities, and the city says anything you put in other easements sits there at your own risk.
  • Water sets its own setbacks. Keep clear of the ordinary high water level of lakes and creeks, 100-year storm and floodplain elevations, and delineated wetland edges.
  • Pools need five feet. A non-surmountable five-foot fence is required around residential pools and spas.
  • Property lines are yours to prove. The city expects the owner to know where they are, which is why we locate them before we quote.

We confirm the current rules with planning, call in locates through Gopher State One Call, and handle a building permit on the rare job that needs one.

Not Set on Cedar? Here's What Else We Build

Most of our Minnetonka calls are about cedar, but it isn’t the whole lineup. Still deciding? Here’s what else our Minnetonka fence contractors install.

Chain Link Fencing

Low cost, low fuss, and it never needs a drop of stain. It also keeps a view intact, which matters more here than in most suburbs given how many properties back onto water or woods.

Ornamental Steel Fence

All the presence of cedar with none of the upkeep. Powder coating handles rust and salt for years on end, and spaced pickets keep a front yard feeling open.

Vinyl Fencing (4 ft and 6 ft)

Holds its color rather than drifting toward gray, and asks nothing of you afterward. Less natural-looking than wood, and the trade most people are happy to make.

Fence Replacement & Repair

Leaning posts, sagging gates, a few panels down after a storm. We fix what’s sound and replace what isn’t, in cedar or anything else here.

Why Minnetonka Homeowners Choose Next Day Fences

A city this relaxed about permits puts the whole weight of the job on whoever you hire. Nobody from Minnetonka is coming out to check the fastener, the post depth, or whether your fence sits in an easement. We’ve been building across the communities we serve since 2021, and cedar is the bulk of it.

  • Hot-dipped galvanized or stainless fasteners, never plain steel
  • Three rails on six-foot panels, with post spacing to match
  • Posts set to Hennepin County’s 42-inch frost depth
  • Property lines located before anything is quoted
  • Easements, wetland edges, and water setbacks checked first
  • Locates booked with Gopher State One Call ahead of the dig
  • Your liability protection spelled out in the contract
  • Lifetime warranty on installed posts
  • 5 to 10 year craftsmanship warranty
  • Most residential cedar jobs wrapped in one to two days

Most of that happens before we ever unload a board. It isn’t the exciting part of the job, but it’s the part you’ll be glad we did.

Minnetonka Cedar Fencing FAQs

Almost certainly not. Minnetonka only requires a building permit above seven feet, and a standard privacy fence sits well under that. We still check easements and water setbacks, since those apply whether a permit does or not.

Neither, as it happens. Minnetonka's handout states that fencing materials can go on either side of the support post, with no right or wrong side. It's one of the few cities around here that leaves the choice to you.

Right up to it. Minnetonka sets no minimum setback from property lines, though the fence does have to stay on your land, and the city expects you to know where that line actually is. We locate it before quoting.

Quite a bit. You'll need to stay clear of the ordinary high water level, the 100-year storm and floodplain elevations, and any delineated wetland edge. We check those before drawing a line, and a city planner can confirm specifics for your parcel.

Cedar's natural oils are mildly acidic and react with plain steel, which leaves black streaks running down the boards. Hot-dip galvanized or stainless fasteners avoid that entirely, and the cost difference is negligible.
