How a Maple Grove Cedar Fence Stays Private
Cedar arrives at the yard with moisture still in it, sometimes a lot of it, and as it dries over that first summer, every board gives up a little width. On a privacy fence built tight from green stock, you end up looking through gaps by August that weren’t there in May.
So we build for it rather than against it. Properly seasoned boards go up with the shrinkage already accounted for, and on a solid privacy run we’ll often steer you toward board-on-board instead, where the overlap swallows the movement and the fence stays private no matter what the wood does. It’s the difference between a fence that looks right on install day and one that still looks right a year later.

Satisfied Customers
These guys do phenomenal work. We have a huge backyard and we we’re expecting them to take a few days, they ended up getting it all done in a day and it looked absolutely stunning! One small issue was when the inspector came out after, it was just barely over the property line on one side. Dave and his team came out and took down and reinstalled to make sure we were within our property line right away. Fantastic communication, quick service and exceptional work. I would recommend Next Day Fence to anyone and everyone.
We had new Fences installed here in our Doggie Daycare interior play room, and the team was fast, professional and the product delivered was second to none. Great job guys!! I highly recommend this company if you have any fencing needs large or small. You can trust Next Day Fences will not disappoint! I’d use them again in a heartbeat. ~ Thank you!
Our Cedar Fencing Options in Maple Grove
Six feet is the ceiling across a Maple Grove residential lot, and anything taller needs a conditional use permit, which is a council decision rather than a form. Out front, the city only allows decorative fencing at 3.5 feet or less, and it names picket specifically.
Board-on-Board
Overlapping boards with the rails tucked behind them, finished-looking from both yards. The overlap also absorbs seasonal movement, which is why it’s our default recommendation for a full-privacy run in a newer subdivision where houses sit close.
Solid Privacy
Boards butted tight for a complete screen at the full six feet. The most affordable path to real privacy, and the style most association guidelines are written around.
Spaced Picket
The one style Maple Grove’s ordinance names for front yards, where decorative fencing is allowed up to 3.5 feet. Chain link is specifically excluded from that allowance, so picket is how you get a front boundary at all.
Shadowbox
Alternating boards on either side of the rail, so both yards see the same face and wind moves through rather than pushing against it. A good neighbor on a shared line.
Every one of them is built by our cedar fence installation crews, with posts dug to the 42 inches Hennepin County’s frost zone demands.
A Solid Cedar Fence Cannot Go Near the Lakeshore
Maple Grove has seven recreational lakes, and property on them follows a rule that surprises almost everyone. Inside the 75-foot lakeshore setback, a fence tops out at five feet, has to stay see-through to roughly the degree a chain-link fence is, and has to use materials treated to blend with the natural surroundings. A solid cedar privacy panel fails two of those three.
The good news is that cedar is close to ideal for the third. Left natural or finished in a muted tone, it blends with a wooded shoreline better than anything else we install, and an open-picket cedar run satisfies the visibility standard while still looking like something you chose. Full privacy stays available on the parts of the yard that sit outside the setback, so we map where the line falls before designing anything.
Your Association Will Have Opinions About the Stain
The city does not enforce covenants here and will tell you to speak to your association, which in a city this new means most homeowners answer to one. Associations tend to care about things the ordinance never mentions: board profile, cap style, panel height, and above all, color.
That’s worth planning rather than discovering. We match stain to whatever your neighborhood already runs and put the color in the proposal so your board has something concrete to approve. New cedar needs a season to dry before its first coat anyway, so there’s time. After that, cedar fence staining every few years keeps the color where the covenants want it and keeps water out of the grain, which is the part that actually matters.
Maple Grove Issues No Fence Permit, So Compliance Lands on Your Contractor
The city’s own fence handout says fences need no permit, that the zoning ordinance still governs them, and that responsibility for compliance sits with the owner or the contractor. Nothing external catches a mistake. What Section 36-790 asks for:
- A six-foot ceiling in residential districts. Going above it means a conditional use permit, decided by the council.
- Nothing in front of the setback line. The lone exception is decorative fencing at 3.5 feet or under that isn’t acting as an enclosure.
- A 30-foot corner sight triangle. Nothing over 30 inches above street centerline grade, and unlike some cities, there’s no exemption for open mesh.
- Five feet inside the 75-foot lakeshore setback. See-through, in materials that blend with the surroundings.
- A way through. Where a fence blocks front-to-rear access, the code wants a gate or collapsible section at least four feet wide between the side lot line and the house.
- Entirely on your property. Unless your neighbor agrees in writing, and the city may ask for a registered land surveyor.
- Your association is separate. The city doesn’t enforce covenants and will point you back to your board.
Community Development confirms the current position for us on every job, we assemble whatever your board asks for, and locates go in through Gopher State One Call well ahead of the dig.
Not Set on Cedar? Here's What Else We Build
Most Maple Grove conversations start with cedar, though it isn’t the whole range. Weighing it up? Here’s the rest of what our Maple Grove fence contractors install.
Chain Link Fencing
Cheap, durable, and the one thing the ordinance will not let you put in a front yard, since the decorative allowance excludes it. Out back it earns its keep, and on a lakeshore lot it’s the benchmark the visibility rule is measured against.
Ornamental Steel Fence
Cedar’s presence without the maintenance, and powder coating that shrugs off salt and rain for years. Its open pickets also work inside the lakeshore setback where solid panels can’t.
Vinyl Fencing (4 ft and 6 ft)
A surface that never sees a brush and a shade that holds for the life of the panel. Associations tend to like it for exactly that reason, since year eight looks much like day one.
Fence Replacement & Repair
Maple Grove is young enough that most fences here are still on their first life, but storms and vehicles don’t care. We handle fence repair on what’s salvageable and replace what isn’t.
Our Process
Four stages, and our fence installation service runs them the same way, whichever material you settle on.
1. Initial Consultation
We start by talking through what the fence is for and what you’d like to spend, then bring back options that suit the lot you actually have.
2. On-Site Assessment
We schedule a free on-site visit to take measurements, identify obstacles, review your yard conditions, and explain the installation method so you know exactly what you’re getting.
3. Proposal & Approval
You receive a clear, detailed proposal with no confusion or hidden details. Once approved, we move straight into scheduling.
4. Permit, Inspection, and Build
We handle permits, utility marking, and any required inspections, then build to the approved layout.
Why Maple Grove Homeowners Choose Next Day Fences

- Zoning checked against Section 36-790 before we quote
- Lakeshore setback mapped on waterfront lots
- Stain color specified for your association to approve
- Sight triangle and required gate access built into the layout
- Gopher State One Call notified before a shovel moves
- Liability cover written into your contract
- Lifetime warranty on installed posts
- 5 to 10 year craftsmanship warranty
- Most residential cedar jobs wrapped in one to two days
We’ve made our name on the parts nobody sees, because a fence you stop thinking about is the whole point.
Speak with Cedar Fence Installation Contractors in Maple Grove, MN
Your association will want something specific on paper, and if you’re on the water, the lake rules only affect part of the yard. Both are easier to settle standing in it than over the phone.
We’re happy to come out and look whenever it suits you. We’d bring stain options your board can actually approve, show you where the lakeshore setback stops, and give you an honest price for the whole thing. And if you’d rather sit with it afterward, that’s completely fine by us.
Maple Grove Cedar Fencing FAQs
1. Does Maple Grove permit cedar fences?
The city's handout says no permit is needed, while making clear the zoning ordinance still applies and compliance rests with you or your contractor. We check the current position with Community Development regardless, because without a permit nobody else is reviewing the layout.
2. How tall can my cedar fence be?
Six feet across a residential lot, with anything taller requiring a conditional use permit. Front yards are limited to decorative fencing at 3.5 feet or less, and picket is named specifically. Lakeshore lots are capped at five feet inside the 75-foot setback.
3. My lot is on one of the lakes. Can I have privacy?
Inside the 75-foot setback, not in the usual sense. Fences there stay under five feet, remain see-through, and use materials that blend with the surroundings. Outside that line, a full cedar privacy fence is fine, and we map exactly where it falls.
4. Will my homeowners association need to approve it?
Almost certainly, and the city won't get involved either way. We specify board style, height, and stain color in the proposal so your board has something concrete in front of them rather than a vague description.
5. Why do gaps open up in some cedar fences?
Because the boards went up wet. Cedar shrinks as it dries through its first summer, and a privacy fence built tight from green stock will show daylight by the end of it. Seasoned stock and a board-on-board layout both solve it.
